Sodium Nitrite FCC, also goes by NaNO2 is a food grade additive used commonly in meat processing products. It is an antioxidant used to cure meats such as beef jerky, ham, bacon, hot dogs, sausages, and more. It blocks the growth of bacteria that causes botulism and prevents spoilage. It can help prevent the growth of Listeria monocytogenes. As a preservative, it substantially lengthens the shelf life of cured meats.
It is also used as a corrosion inhibitor in old tanks, pipelines, antifreeze, and paints. In detinning, it acts as a depolarizer and oxidizing agent. Sodium Nitrite is used in phosphate coatings, gold playing baths, heat transfer salt, and more. It is a polymer inhibitor for synthetic rubber. In wastewater treatment, it is used for odor control and to slow down bacteria growth.
